Come Enjoy & Support Kennett High School’s Spring Concert!

You are invited to a
festive night celebrating music and music education,
spring, and this year’s seniors!

When: Thursday May 17 at 7:00 pm
Where: The KHS Loynd Auditorium.

Featured performance groups include:

the award winning Symphonic Band, Stage Band, Concert Choir, and two KHS Drumlines.

The Concert Choir will open the program with Frank Sinatra’s classic jazztune “Mack the Knife” featuring Mae VanRossum and Anthony Ferrara as soloists. Next the choir will sing a beautiful lullaby entitled “White Horses” by Gwyneth Walker. The final selections of the concert choir will include pop songs “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz and “Under Pressure” featuring several soloists.

The KHS Drumline will perform an original composition entitled “40 Shenanigans.” Senior Drumline member Adam Levine composed the majority of the song, writing out parts for the ensemble. The rest of the Drumline collaborated to create the remainder of the piece. The Eagle Drumline will also perform an original song. The composition project was designed to introduce the group to the collaborative, creative process used by all the preceding KHS Drumlines, serving to establish those who began percussion lessons in high school as experienced young musicians.

The Stage Band will electrify the auditorium with its energetic performance. This portion of the show will open with the solid rock classic, “Gonna Fly Now,” which will be played again by the Kennett High School Stage Band on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art during its Memorial Day weekend trip to the City ofBrotherly Love. Zack Whitley and Caleb Ayers will be the featured as soloist. The feel will shift for the Chuck Mangione classic, “Feels So Good,” arranged by V. Lopez. This samba will feature several seniors including Seth Davison, Caleb Ayers, Thomas Gregston, JessicaFleck, and Adam Levine. The closer will be a medley of Chicago-style blues and soul, “Blues Brothers Revue” arranged by R. Holmes. Great improv will be a part of all songs.

Symphonic Band will open its portion of the program with “Folk Song Suite,” Movement I: “Seventeen Come Sunday” and Movement III: “Folk Songs from Somerset.” Composed by Ralph Von Williams in 1923, this piece has come to be accepted as classic military band literature. Next, the band will perform an audience participation sing-a-long number, “Highlights from The Sound of Music,” arranged by J. Vinson. Don’tworry if you don’t know the words. A slide show featuring beautiful pictures of local mountains as the backdrop will display the lyrics for you! The concert will close with a rousing rendition of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” arranged by K. Whitcomb.

Throughout the course of the evening, seniors will be recognized for their contributions to the music program throughout their 4 years at Kennett High School. In addition to music department acknowledgements, the local Jean Fickett Eagle Spirit Award and the Ernie Mills Low Brass Award will be announced. Additionally, national awards including the John Philip Sousa Award, Louis Armstrong Jazz Award, Band Director’s Award, Quincy Jones Musicianship Award, National School Choral Award, and Choral Directors Award will be bestowed.
